How to choose the appropriate volume license key for Windows
The various keys and products (number of downloads) available to our volume license customers are available at the Volume Authorization Service Center (VLSC) portal. Authorized users can use the portal to manage software security benefits, track authorization information, and download product and product keys. In general, the person with access may come from the purchasing team or IT management, not the implementer responsible for software installation and management. This can be a bit of a problem because people with access may not always know which type of key to retrieve... and the person requesting the key probably doesn't know which key to request. This document is intended to help anyone who needs to know the following: 1) How to organize Windows Volume License product keys, and 2) How to choose the appropriate product key for your specific organization. Before we go any further, it's important to note that not all volume license customers have access to all key types; this is largely dependent on the purchase agreement. For more information on this, please see this document on the portal.
With the release of Windows Vista, we introduced two new key types for volume license customers: 1) Key Management Service (KMS), and 2) Multiple Activation Key (MAK). Since the release of Windows Vista (that is, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2), we have covered product keys for all versions of Windows available to our volume license customers. This document does not discuss the use of these keys and methods (execution, method selection, etc.) for volume activation. Check out our TechCenter for more information on these topics. Finally, most customers will use both KMS and MAK in their environment, so you may want to understand how these two keys work and how to choose the right key for each type.
When choosing a key for Windows, you will need to answer the following two main questions:
Which products will be deployed and which products need to be activated?
Which of the following methods do you plan to use: KMS, MAK, or both?
